Sanjeevani: bringing care closer to rural Nepal

Project Sanjeevani starts with a straightforward purpose: bring free consultations and essential care closer to underserved communities in Nepal. Mobile health camps are the means of doing that. The aim is to make care more accessible in the places people call home.

This September reflection looks at the purpose of the program and the progress recorded in Nivaran’s public dashboard.

Care that begins closer to home

Nivaran’s Sanjeevani campaign supports mobile camps offering free consultations and essential care. Its maternal and child health campaign focuses on antenatal screening and care for mothers and children through those camps.

These parts of the program share a principle: access should be designed around the community. For us, bringing care closer means keeping practical access at the centre of planning, alongside the clinical service offered on the day.

It also means recognizing the limits of a camp. A consultation is one point in a person’s relationship with healthcare. We believe the quality of that encounter should include understandable information about next steps, rather than treating attendance alone as the whole outcome.

Nivaran’s public Sanjeevani dashboard reports 16 completed camps and 17,355 patients served across all seven provinces, with a reporting cutoff of February 2026. Those are the program’s published figures for that period, not new totals for September.

Clear dates help supporters interpret progress. A new article should not make an older reporting period look like a fresh round of delivery. Future reporting should show what changed and when.
